Although the 10 years investigation into the death of JFK concluded Lee Harvey Oswald was the sole assassin still many historians and experts suspect that it is not only him who has been involved in this but a few others making it a conspiracy. Among the suspects, the CIA and Lyndon Johnson play some major roles as they also had substantial motives and the best opportunity to carry out the crime. Even though it has been almost four decades since the assassination still there had not been adequate amount of information revealed regarding who did this & why? Discussed below are some of the motives and opportunities of several individuals/groups who are suspected to be assassins. Among the suspects in the JFK case, Lee Harvey Oswald is a prime suspect despite his limited motive to assassinate Kennedy. In an interview with Aline Mosby a United Press International reporter in Moscow in 1959, Oswald mentioned that “I ‘am a Marxist” highlighting that during the cold war he had the motive to assassinate the president of the USA who represented the enemy from a communist point of view. However, if one looks at the historical detail more closely, it would emerge that JFK was a president advocating more positive relationships with the USSR for example establishing a hot line with Russia in 1963. Accordingly President Kennedy was soft on communism and to someone like Oswald the best kind of president. He himself said “Kennedy was a good leader” expressing admiration and showing how he lacked the motive to do so. Though Oswald had a limited motive, his opportunity to do such a thing is substantial. On 21st November 1963 before the arrival of the president a person named Howard Brennan has reported that he has seen a man on the 6th floor of the Book Depository when he was sitting on a wall directly opposite to the building. Soon afterwards when the president arrived he has heard an explosion and very soon he has realized that it was a gun fire. Short afterwards the gunshot he has seen a man aiming a gun at the president from the 6th floor of the building. At a line-up in police headquarters that evening Brennan told the warren commission that he could identify Oswald as being the same man he saw at the sixth floor window. This proves that Oswald had an enough opportunity for the assassination. Later as a result of the investigations done in the 6th floor of the building, a Mannlicher -Carcano rifle was found which is suspected to be used in the assassination. Under the supervision of FBI the rifle was subjected to a serious identification and they discovered a palm print which they later identified as the correct palm print of Lee Harvey Oswald. Also the bullets and the cartridges found from the president limousine were identified by experts as the bullets fired from this Carcano rifle. This is a major evidence against the Oswald again proving his substantial opportunity to carry out the crime. Apart from these witnesses Warren commission has reported that Oswald was a well-trained Marine soldier who received an extensive training in marksmanship. Therefore he also had the enough skill to shoot. When considering all these facts it is clear that there had been enough opportunity to Lee Harvey Oswald to carry this crime to a greater extent. According to many historians and experts another suspect in this case is the CIA. Distributed in all around the globe CIA has a massive strength and control over the world. In early 1960 and 1961 CIA trained and equipped a force of Cuban exiles and inserted them into Cuba at the Bay of Pigs to attack Castro. In the battle followed the exiles were totally destroyed by Castro’s communist Cuban forces. Though CIA appealed to President Kennedy for air support it was neglected. Inevitably the exiles were totally massacred. This was a major point as many experts believe which have influenced in the assassination as both the CIA and Cuban exiles thought that they are betrayed by President Kennedy. CIA believed that Kennedy was soft on communism and secondly Kennedy resolved to downgrade the functions of the CIA and hand over many of its primary functions to other agencies. It could well have been perceived that a president soft on communism was attempting to destroy the organization whose primary role was to defend against communism. This therefore can be regarded as adequate motive and also CIA had the opportunity to place their own assassins at the scene of the crime and then cover up any involvement. Same as the motive CIA also had a substantial opportunity for this assassination. The Cuban exiles who were under the control of CIA who were well trained and equipped with military skills was a major trump they had against the JFK. Especially because of JFK’s failure to support the Cuban Brigade during the ill-fated invasion at the Bay of Pigs could clearly have alienated the exiles to go against and revenge President Kennedy under the courageous guidance of the CIA. Considering that it can be concluded that the CIA had the enough opportunity for such an audacious attack. Other than the Lee Harvey Oswald and the CIA another suspect in this assassination is the Mafia. While the Mafia did indeed have some embarrassing information on John and Robert Kennedy, it is clear that the Mob had strong motives for wanting the President dead. There is evidence of Mafia involvement in the assassination. Even the ultra-cautious HSCA concluded the Mafia had the means, the motive, and the opportunity to assassinate President Kennedy. Prior to the assassination, various Mafia leaders were heard to threaten JFK’s life. Without question, a Mafia man, Jack Ruby, silenced Lee Harvey Oswald before he had a chance to tell his side of the story. Furthermore, right after the President’s visit to Dallas was announced, Ruby began making numerous calls to important Mafia contacts all over the country. Ruby, like Eugene Brading, was in H. L. Hunt’s offices the day before the shooting. Convicted Texas hitman Charles Harrelson has been identified as the tall man in the famous photos of the three “tramps” who were arrested in the railroad yard behind Dealey Plaza shortly after the assassination. In the early 1980s, Harrelson was convicted of murdering federal judge John Wood with a high-powered rifle, and is currently serving his sentence in a Texas prison. During the stand-off that preceded his arrest, Harrelson not only confessed to killing Judge Wood, but also said he had been involved in the Kennedy assassination. Harrelson later retracted his statement about having taken part in the assassination, claiming he had fabricated it under the influence of cocaine. When arrested, Harrelson was found to be carrying the business card of R. D. Matthews, who, according to the HSCA, was acquainted with Jack Ruby and with other Dallas crime figures. At Harrelson’s trial, Joe Chagra, the brother of the man who was believed to have hired Harrelson, testified that Harrelson was given the contract to kill Judge Wood after he claimed to have participated in the JFK assassination. Indicted along with Harrelson in the plot to kill Judge Wood was the brother of New Orleans crime boss Carlos Marcello, who was one of the Mafia figures identified by the Select Committee as possibly having been involved in the assassination of President Kennedy. Researcher Gary Mack asked an anthropologist to compare photos of the tall tramp with pictures of Harrelson. The anthropologist reported it was likely they were same person. Similarly, police officers trained in photo identification have advised Harrison Livingstone that Harrelson definitely appears to be the tall tramp. So far federal authorities have shown no interest in investigating Harrelson in connection with any role he might have had in the assassination. Why would the Mafia have wanted JFK dead? Quite simply, because the Kennedy administration was threatening the very existence of organized crime in America. Robert Kennedy was waging an unprecedented war on the Mafia, a war that targeted not just Mafia operations but also Mafia leaders themselves. When analysing all these theories and facts all together it’s clear that one or more of the above mentioned individuals/groups had took part in the assassination as they had the adequate motives and opportunities to carry out the assassination. Apart from them, the KGB, Anti -Castro Cuban exile groups and Lyndon B Johnson etc. too plays key roles in this drama.
